Old news, we know, but the 3DS has really captured our attentions at (lol) recently.
The 3D portable gaming console from Nintendo is sure to be a hot seller and with it’s ability to show 3D without the stupid glasses, we are very excited.
The console will have a compatible cartridge slot, presumably so that it can also play your favourites from the old collection nestled with your Advance SP down in the basement.
Engadget reports that the 3D effect “just works” but is sometimes lost when you don’t stare directly at the screen. How will the console fare on a bumpy journey through the Pennines? We don’t know.
The console has an accelerometer and a gyro-scope as well as inbuilt vibration technology (Can anybody confirm these things for us?) but apparently not too many titles use these functions as of yet but there is a lot of room to create some amazing games here.
The console can take pictures in 3D. Obviously the first thing you presume is that these would be in HD. No, they’re not. HQ? No, not even that. A couple of MP? No, these cameras operate in VGA, some kind of prehistoric technology that nobody has even heard of.
The graphics on board this pocket device are simple but the best yet for Nintendo’s handheld franchise. They reportedly match up to iPhone or PS2 quality - not the best we’ve seen but not too shabby either.
I know what you guys are thinking, “What if I don’t have many 3D compatible games?” Well, worry no more my friends, the 3DS will have a 2D mode as well for whenever you are feeling a bit retro.
We can’t wait for this baby to hit the shelves.
It was recently announced by Warner Bros. that MMORPG “Lord of the Rings Online” is going to become ‘free to play.’ The game will no longer have a monthly subscription and the new payment model will be put in place around September, with the beta starting on June 16.
Following the trend set by several free to play MMORPG’s players will have to pay for “premium” content, as well as paying after the player hits level 50 (the vanilla level cap without expansions). A LOTR store will be made featuring the expansion packs as well as items like potions, additional character slots and customisation options. Additionally, players can opt to be a ‘VIP’ and gain access to all the premium features.

Lucid Dreaming for those that don’t know, is a state of dreaming in which the dreamer is aware of the fact that they’re dreaming and are able to control the dream as a result of this. Lucid dreamers have reported all kinds of different experiences whilst doing this, but everyone seems to agree that it’s pretty damned cool.
Certain similarities were found between those that experience these dreams, they tended to be less susceptible to motion sickness, be more adept when it comes to spatial skills as well as boasting a higher level of concentration. And so Jayne Gackenbach who had previously done work on lucid dreaming, theorised that due to these traits, gamers would be more likely to have lucid dreams.
After years of research it appears this may well be the case, as well as gamers seeing other differences whilst dreaming such as a higher probability of switching from first person, to third or vice versa.
Gackenbach (as well as other researches in the field) believe that lucid dreams could, for many, be the answer to recurring nightmares and the possible cure for certain psychological conditions.
With the workings of the brain still very much a mystery, and with dreams being such a large part of many of our lives, this research is likely to see a boost in the near future, rather than diminishing. Personally, I’m glad.
Here you can see a compilation of work she’s presented based on the affects of ‘video games on consciousness’, which includes one on lucid dreaming.
PicPlz to hit the Android Market
New location-based, picture-sharing service, PicPlz hit the Android market in it’s early beta form the other day hoping to catch FourSquare users whilst they are raging about how it can never find where they are in the countryside.
Here’s hoping that with this you can actually show people where you are with the pictures. If PicPlz can’t find your location, choose the nearest one and post a picture, then people can see that you’re actually there, not here.
As well as the Android version, there is a web service too but only Android account holders can access it at the moment. If the executives open this up to the iPhone market too, this could be very big.
Potential users should note that it is only available in the US right now, I’m hoping that they open it to Europe soon.

Google Latitude to run constantly on iPhone OS 4?
Back to iPhone OS 4 now and Tech Crunch reports that Apple is considering using Google Latitude as one of it’s native apps.
Using Apple’s new multi-tasking system, Google wants to have it’s location reporting service, Latitude, tracking you full-time across the map. This will mean that instead of every 5 minutes when you log in at a café to report your location to your friends, your face will be literally moving around Google Maps for others to follow you. This could make for some awesome zombie games.
If other apps cotton on to this, serious tag games could be played with iPods. I’m looking forward to this very, very much.

TeamSpeak is the mother of VoIP when it comes to gaming.
TeamSpeak is flexible, powerful, scalable software which enables people to speak with one another over the Internet.
Though not officially designed for gaming, all of it’s users say it is, and that means something.
3D sound allows you to place different users voices in different places around you at measurable distances or to feel as if they are running alongside you.
The ability to record the speech through TeamSpeak allows for Machinima to be made easily for any game and used in conjunction with 3D sound really allows for that extra bit of oomph.
But above all of this is the sexy female voice you can get to say “user joined your channel,” “error,” and other things.
TeamSpeak is definitely worth a download if you are an avid online pc gamer or looking to start a clan or host a server in-game. Check it out here.
